Dual boot setup (No wish wash)

Its about manually setting up (and thus learning to setup) a genuine dual boot system; no Live CD, no hypervisor trickery, no "installing linux under window as-another-app". In short , no child's play.... just plain old , black and white, hardcore, kick ass, dual boot system.

First I installed the windows vista , while making sure that the NTFS formating magic only touches a portion of the hard drive (about 90 GB out of 160GB). And the installed windows remains confined to the NTFS partition ( of course ! ... it can't even breath anywhere else ). The subsequent booting allowed the windows loader to run the OS. When I explored the file system with the windows file explorer , it only showed the 90 GB I allowed it to have. There was no mention or icon for the rest of the hard drive ( first baby steps into freedom !).

Then I took up my Ubuntu Linux 9.04 CD and started installing it. During the installation it gave me options about the partitioning of the hard drive (while showing me that the system already has windows on 90 GB and the rest of the drive is "free" space !!). One of the options allowed me to slide a button on a scale representing the entire 160 GB of the hard drive. The left side of the button remained blue (for vista) and the right side remained orange (for ubuntu) while I played and enjoyed sliding it. I settled for 90/70 division between vista and ubuntu respectively. The installation proceeded fine.

Now came the moment of truth. On reboot, the Gnu's GRUB operating system loader , rather than the windows loader , got hold of the show... and presented me with a menu containing both ubuntu and vista as the operating systems to choose from. Ubuntu was highlighted , and if I won't do anything , ubuntu will automatically be started in 10 seconds

[ Note: in an earlier failed attempt to have dual booting, I first installed ubuntu and then tried windows, but the windows installer flatly refused the offer of co-existence. It even refused to touch the remaining free space...let alone create and ntfs partition.... so much for the "inter-operable by design" marketing mantra !! ]

So finally I had a dual boot system with Linux in(fucking)charge of the show... not exactly what microsoft might have in mind.
